Blessed Basil Moreau, CSC, founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross, understood the education of children as: "...the formation of the very heart of the child, and the full development of his or her particular capacity and understanding of life in relation to God." This vision of Blessed Basil Moreau continues to be the guiding principle of Holy Cross schools around the world, including our own parish school of Saint Joseph. At Saint Joseph Grade School, we seek to form and educate the minds and hearts of our students by integrating a strong academic curriculum with an authentically Christian education. This is in keeping with Fr. Moreau's philosophy of education which aims to create not only men and women of learning, but men and women of virtue.
WHAT WE DO
According to its statutes, the School Board assists the pastor and the principal of Saint Joseph School in carrying out this vision for over 425 children in grades K-8. The Home and School Association (HASA) provides a community building opportunity for parents of children in the school, as well as support for school teachers and staff.
Fund-raising activities, which pay for special school needs, include the biennial St. Joe Auction. In 2022, the auction raised over $130,000 to support the educational ministry of our parish. The annual "For the Kids" Golf Benefit supports the SJGS Excellence Fund, which provides for school needs including tuition assistance for families. In 2020, this event raised over $19,000. Also in 2020 we held our 14th parish Trivia Night that raised an additional $19,000 towards the SJGS Excellence Fund.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED
Besides the School Board and HASA, and the above mentioned fund-raising opportunities, volunteers are also needed for the After School Care Program; the Athletic Committee, which organizes and administers all sports for grade school children and related fund-raisers; Library and Teacher Aides and Playground Monitors. Boys and girls, including those from other parishes and schools, participate in our Boy Scout/Girl Scout program, which progresses from first through eighth grade, and beyond. If you are interested in serving on the School Board, contact the Pastor.
